08 Mar Meet the RMT: Katarina
Welcome to the next installment of our series highlighting the people who make Massago so special. In honour of International Women’s Day this month, we chatted with RMT Katarina.
Through her 30s, Katarina thought about pursuing a career in massage therapy but never fully explored it. “It seemed like there was a lot involved [with schooling] and at that point, I had a young child at home,” she recalls. “I kind of let the idea go.”
After working in various sales roles through the years, she revisited the idea of massage therapy. “I researched the industry and took the time to think about what was important to me—and that’s working with and helping people,” she says. “I thought to myself, ‘Massage can give me the life I want.’”
And so, Katarina went back to school as a mature student—“the scariest thing ever in your 40s,” she laughs. “I figured I might fail, but I had to try. But deep down, I knew I wouldn’t fail—I just knew it.”
She quickly took to her new career, excelling in school and then as a registered massage therapist with Massago and on her own. “One of the things that surprised me [about this industry] was how fast you learn on the job. I picked up and learned things very, very quickly—faster than at any job I’ve ever had,” says Katarina, who has been part of the Massago team for five years.
She cites the autonomy of the work as one of her favourite parts of the role. “I’m responsible for myself—it’s the best life. Another thing I love about the industry is the fact that there are many opportunities to try different things,” she says. “If you’re truly passionate about helping people, it’s a great profession with so much to offer. I feel inspired by it because it keeps me focused on what’s important in life.”
She offers these words of advice to those considering massage therapy as a career option, especially later in life: “It’s never too late to learn; you only get one shot in this life. It took me way too long to believe in my abilities. Take the bull by the horns and go for it! I wish I had done it sooner.”
Massago works exclusively with therapists who are registered and in good standing with their province’s college of massage therapists or with governing massage associations. Learn more about our massage therapy services or book an appointment.
