Six ways to combat stress

While it’s a natural part of life, chronic stress can lead to a number of health issues. April marks National Stress Awareness Month, so we’ve compiled six helpful tips on how to combat stress.

Of course, massage therapy has been shown to reduce stress on physical and psychological levels. It triggers the release of endorphins into the bloodstream and reduces the levels of stress hormones like cortisol, a hormone that our body releases when we feel stressed or anxious. Learn more about the mental health benefits of massage.

6 stress-reduction tips you should try

We all know of what we’re “supposed” to do to reduce stress: eat healthy, whole foods; exercise regularly; drink enough water; take your vitamins; and practice self-care. Well, there’s a reason they’re listed in every resource on reducing stress: they work! You should also aim to:

  • Get enough sleep! Create a solid wind-down routine in the evening and make your bed a comfortable, inviting environment. Check out our recent blog post on why massage therapy is essential for a good night’s sleep.
  • Practice yoga, meditate and/or engage in mindfulness exercises to help clear your head and live more in the moment.
  • Start your week on a high note with these prep tips to avoid the Sunday scaries.
  • Minimize your phone and screen time. If this is challenging for you, set limits on mobile apps so you can only use them for a certain length of time each day, or strive for a screen-free day each week.
  • Engage in forest bathing, which is proven to help reduce stress (so much so that doctors can now prescribe time in nature in Canada). A little sunlight and fresh air can work wonders!
  • Schedule regular massages throughout the year. (We can help with that!)

With these tips, you’ll be well on your way to less stress and a healthier, happier you.
