6 tips to create a morning routine

What does a typical morning look like for you? Are you hitting the ‘snooze’ button several times or rushing around while trying to get ready for work or school?

Creating a solid morning routine will set the tone for the rest of the day. Not only will it help with your productivity and organization, but it will also lead to less stress and an overall happier you! And no, you don’t need to wake up at 4 a.m. to do it (unless that’s your thing!).

How to develop a morning routine

Before beginning your new routine, make sure to set out goals on what you want to achieve. Is it better sleep? Less rushing around in the morning? Incorporating exercise into your day? Knowing what you want will help you form a strategy to meet your goals.

We’ve compiled tips to help you develop a morning routine and start your day on a positive note:

Organize what you can the night before.

Lay out your outfit and accessories, prep your breakfast and lunch, fill up your water bottle and tidy up to save time in the morning. It’s also an excellent opportunity to create a checklist of what you need to do the next day so you’re not thinking about it as you drift off to sleep.

Practice sleep hygiene.
Sleep hygiene is one of the best ways to promote a good night’s sleep, and it looks a little different for everyone. Wind down a few hours before heading to bed, avoid screentime and make your bedroom a comfortable environment that’s conducive to sleep.

Set a bedtime AND wake-up time and stick to it.
Yes, even on weekends! Try to wake up around the same time every day. Though it’s tempting to keep hitting ‘snooze’, your body’s internal clock (circadian rhythm) will thank you.

Stop reaching for your phone upon waking!
Starting the day with mindlessly scrolling social media or answering emails isn’t ideal. Instead, practice healthy habits like meditation or reading, or kick-start your day with some positive affirmations or journaling.

Move your body.
Whether you plan for an intense spin class or a more relaxing yoga session, make movement part of your routine and get those endorphins flowing. If you’re short on time, check out short online fitness videos or perform exercises during your morning tasks (like squatting while brushing your teeth or making coffee).

Fuel your body.

Drink a big glass of water before enjoying a cup of coffee or tea, and eat a nutritious breakfast of whole, unprocessed foods to keep you fuelled.

It takes time to form new habits, and diving into a new routine is no different! If you’re not usually a morning person, start by incorporating gradual changes.

While consistency is vital to encouraging your new healthy habits to stick around in the long-term, flexibility is also essential. If it takes you time to get settled into your routine, be gentle with yourself! Focus on progress over perfection.
